Louisbourg, Nova Scotia
On Tuesday we headed out at 9:30 in the morning for the drive to Louisbourg. It is a very old French fortress on the ocean about an hour and a half from here. It is a must see when you come to Cape Breton and we loved visiting the French colony that shows what it would have been like if we had lived there in the 1700's. The French settled here in 1713 following territorial losses to the English in Newfoundland and Acadia. Based on a

thriving fishing industry and trade it became France's most important stronghold and seaport in what we

now call Atlantic Canada. We had a great day watching soldiers and enjoying mingling with the players who were in costume and following the lifestyle of the 17th century. We even ate lunch At an old fashioned restaurant using one large spoon as a utensil. The kids participated in a scavenger hunt during our visit at the end they knew a lot more information and won a prize. My mom remembers coming here as a child and swimming in the ocean. They used to walk to the fort which had only one main building as it was burned down and has been rebuilt over the last 40/50 years.
